This article aims to identify the pedagogical potential of course papers in the formation and development of students’ research skills in secondary school settings within the framework of the author’s program «From Historical Sources to Research Skills». The study was conducted based on the Action Research methodology and involved 10 students aged 16-17 within the framework of the subject “History of Kazakhstan.” The main directions of the research include the analysis of students’ cognitive engagement, independence, interest in scientific inquiry, and research activities during the process of completing coursework, as well as the identification of methodological mechanisms that contribute to the development of research skills.
The study examines the process of developing students’ abilities to search for information from various sources, compare and evaluate their reliability, analyze and systematize data, write in an academic style, and formulate well-argued conclusions. The scientific significance of the research lies in substantiating coursework as an effective tool for developing students’ research competence, while its practical significance is reflected in the provision of methodological recommendations for teachers on organizing coursework.
The findings demonstrate that coursework has a positive impact on the development of students’ critical thinking, their ability to present and justify their viewpoints, and the enhancement of responsibility and self-confidence. In addition, the study confirms the crucial role of systematic methodological support in overcoming difficulties related to time management, academic writing, and working with sources. Overall, this research makes a theoretical and practical contribution to the development of research-based learning in schools and the formation of students’ universal research skills.
